Project Based Learning-Our Definition & Explanation
We have learned that PBL is driven by student curiousity or a desire to explore meaningful real-life questions or challenges. Students have the opportunity to make their own choices through teacher facilitation. This enables the learner to collaboratively express creativity and critical thinking as they explore and problem solve through high interest activities. Project Based Learning results in a demonstration or performance of student learning.

Plastic Brainstorm
Brainstorming is an essential element to begin the process of Project Based Learning. We created a brainstorm web on "Plastic" using Inspiration software. This involved graphic design elements, hyperlinking files and exporting files into jpeg images. We found this to be a useful way to visually organize and present information.
The brainstorm web we created is one example of ideas and concepts related to plastic. In a classroom situation, students will take this brainstorm activity in many different directions.

Sample Outcomes for "Plastic" Project
As part of Project Based Learning consideration is given to curriculum outcomes that would possibly be covered as the students engage in research and various other activities.
You will find a sample of grade 7 outcomes taken from core subject areas in the Newfoundland & Labrador Department of Education Curriculum Website. The sample of outcomes we selected is located below on our blog.
Project Based Learning Research
Within the plastics brainstorm web there are many possibilities of projects that could be developed. We chose to focus on "Alternatives to Plastic". During our research to elaborate on this piece we came across an interesting video which highlights some of the avenues being explored to find more environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic. See sidebar to view.
We also found a number of websites that might be of interest in the area of plastic alternatives. These are also located on our sidebar.
